Ireland with mom

In between jobs (I’ve moved from Thismoment to Bigcommerce), I visited Ireland with my mom.  It was a whirlwind tour that involved lots of wrong-side-of-the-road driving (with mom-screaming), some rain, and lots of beautiful scenery. Some highlights: Seeing how cute Galway is and going for a run along the water there.  Mom had her first…

The Zen of Surfing

Today, I went surfing. It wasn’t just any “going surfing.”  It’s the first time I’ve been since March, when I tweaked my back, and my first time since my tropical disease (and accompanying arthritis).  Needless to say, I was a little nervous about it. What if the waves are too big?  What if I can’t…

Singapore: an excellent place to eat

In Singapore, when someone’s friends ask “Where are you taking your friend from out of town?” they tend to mean “Where are you taking your friend to eat?” Food is a big deal in Singapore, as I discovered when I visited with friends from undergrad, Holly and her husband.  Fortunately for me, they were excellent…

Tropical diseases are no fun.

It’s been a while since my last post.  I’ve been busy wrapping up at my old job and starting a new job at Thismoment, where I joined the engineering team almost a month ago! Of course, that’s not all that’s been going on.  Two days after returning home from Singapore where I visited some friends…

In Mumbai, Dharavi slum tour

After leaving Bangladesh, I headed to Mumbai to meet up with a former colleague of mine, M and her daughter who have been living in Chennai for the last two years.  We spent the evenings enjoying the snacks at the hotel; the snacks at the Mumbai Grand Hyatt are excellent and they have non-Indian wine….

Quick update

Last night was the graduation dinner for the AUW graduates. It was very enjoyable, and fun to sit with a group of Cambodian students, along with a current professor, a Bangladeshi student, and a Nepalese student. So much fun to talk with them and catch up. Today was commencement, and it was so very nice…

Dhaka->Chittagong

Tonight, I will attempt to travel from Dhaka to Chittagong by train.  This seems to be the safest route, given that there will be transport on the other end.  It will be interesting, I’m sure. just a quick update….

Two days in Bangkok

Hello from the Suvarnabhumi Airport (the big international one) in Bangkok… a very long post. On Monday, I woke up early (thanks jet lag!), had some coffee in my room and ventured out.  It was a Thai holiday, so there were a fair number of people in the streets, but very few street vendors.  (They…

Travel update: Cyclone Mahasen

Today, I am scheduled to head from Bangkok to Dhaka, and from there on to Chittagong. Alas, there is a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal.  The estimates for when it will make landfall near Chittagong are somewhere between Thursday mid-day and Friday mid-day. I will head to the airport in Bangkok soon.  From there…
