About

Hi, I’m Meg!  Welcome to my blog!

I like thinking about science, writing code, and being outdoors.  I’m a (bio)chemist by education, and a software engineer by trade.  I like to travel, and should probably exercise more.  Surfing is one of my favorite things to do, but I don’t like big waves (yet).

My Ph.D. work was in glycobiology.  You can read the specifics here.

I spent 6 months as an Assistant Professor at the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh.  My students and colleagues there were incredible.  I can also say that I have experienced two Neglected Tropical Diseases first-hand.

In the past my code was mostly PHP/ MySQL/ JavaScript, but now I get paid to play around with Scala.  Pretty cool stuff 🙂  You can check out my resume here.  I’m currently plying my programming trade at Bigcommerce.

My github: https://github.com/megdesko (It’s mostly “Learn Python the Hard Way” and other coding exercises and stuff that’s hidden because it’s for work).

I’m passionate about bringing more diversity to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and about empowering women more generally.

I’ve been a TechWomen mentor for 4 years now; it’s amazing, one of the highlights of every year.

I added some Amazon affiliate links just to see what happens.  Not much so far 🙂
